Hey guys, I've been doing a sig for a friend of mine lately, and I must say it looks pretty good. This is what it looks so far:

Posted Image

He says he loves it, but he'd like a border on it. I was thinking a button-ish border, like this:

Posted Image

I've never done a border like this before, so I don't know how. Can anyone help me?

Which program are you using?

If it's GIMP or Photoshop you could do a great job by creating a mask and then paint the areas that are not to be seen black. So in your example it would first be square, then some part of that is masked so it looks rounded up.

Hope that helps. If not, continue asking.

well,i have read the post twice now. and i seem to understand that you want the top signature to somehow have a border appearance like the second one, with the starcraft theme. is that right?
if so, i work mainly with the photoshop programm and do the same effect with the bevel+emboss effect. with adjustments to make it fit your needs you are able to have that roundish kinda border look.

hope thats would you meant,m8

you can see the bevel emboss effect on the border of my signature. by adjusting size and spread you can make it engulf the entire background to make it appear like a button. that effect would be better seen in my avatar, the blue background

Right, I'm using GIMP. I'll try what you suggested in a bit.

Also, by "button-ish" I meant the part on the edge of the sig that glows white/black slightly so it looks like you can press it.

I think I know exactly what to do now, thanks for the help.

Oh that is an effect. Do not know about the exact structure of GIMP, but it should be an effect called something like "Drop Shadow".

EDIT: Sorry Cale, for some reason i have not seen your post. Ye, Bevel & Emboss should even lead to better results.

no problem,m8. although the drop shadow effect would only make it appear to levitate. as i dont know the precise effects usable by gimp i can only refer to photoshop. so i hope you can somehow make it work the sameway in there.

Another way would be to paint a white line around the image, use Gaussian Blur and delete anything that's not above the actual image. I think I'll try that and post the results.

Hmm looks abit wierd to me. Usually, the half-shadow is made on the bottom, while top should be brightened.
+ Both fighter and orange face "cut" lines are too sharp. Im not sure if it would help but maybe try to shrink the size of sig abit so they blend ?
Great to see you around.

Cheers

Agreed, the resize sharpened the edges of the Eagle render and Pokemon a bit. Should be easy to fix, though.

I think I'll try Bevel+Emboss, I don't know if GIMP can do that but that's why I always keep a copy of Photoshop CS3 handy. :D

Alright, couldn't find Bevel and Emboss in GIMP so I exported it to .psd and used Photoshop CS3 to edit it in. It was easier than I expected, just selected the background layer and clicked the box. :P

Yup although there are several ways to do it, the 'Bevel & Emboss' function would be the simplest for you. Normally you would just select the layer you wanted to apply it to, but since you are working with one complete image (which can be a p.i.t.a.), the best way to do it would be to make a rectangular selection with rounded edges, and apply the Bevel & Emboss filter on the selection. Doesn't matter whether you use GIMP or PS, they both have the exact same filter.

Anyway, I see you sorted it. Gotta say that your work looks pretty nice Vesko, keep it up. A tip: I would also add a bit of shadow in between the rounded rectangular part and the sparkles. Would add a bit more depth and look pretty cool. Make sure you move the shadow like 8 pixels to the left and down, otherwise the angle of light would not make sense compared to the angle of light in the Bevel & Emboss.
