#2078190 The new [CCoF] logo

Posted by Black Scorpion on 23 May 2010 - 08:57 PM in Signature GFX Area

I messed around with an idea for a new logo today. I found an clan logo from the Discovery server on the net and liked the main shapes so much that I used it as inspiration. I hope it didn't turn out to similar.

Comments please. :)

Ah I get you now. That would basically come down to redoing the whole image though. So I'll see what I can do next time I have some time to spare.

Unfortunately that will prove difficult. I could do it, but it would mean stretching the image to twice the width now, which will seriously screw up the looks of it and pull every object on it out of proportion. I'm pretty sure that's not what you want...

After I found the layered version I couldn't resist trying to improve it a little bit.
I redid the base, added some stars and made some other modifications.

I replaced the old image with the new.
Once again, enjoy.

Some time ago I made this wallpaper featuring the USS Prometheus and I stumbled upon on it again today. It has a couple of minor flaws on the detail level, but I thought I'd put it up here anyway. Star Trek fans might like it.
If you want to use it, feel free to do so. The res is 1680x1050 (widescreen), if there are people who want it in another resolution, let me know.

Enjoy.

EDIT:
Image replaced by improved version.

#2075463 The new [CCoF] logo

You might have noticed our new logo and since we're pretty happy with it I just thought it would be fun to show it off a little and tell you how it came to be. I am not sure to what extend this would interest others, but I'll post it anyway, to show how our approach of things is.

As you might have noticed as well, both my partner in crime 'nobodie' and myself are pretty much into RP. We take it pretty seriously and like to look for a meaning behind everything. Same with our clan, we've been thinking hard about a background story and things like that. We would like to grow a little bit in the near future and have sat down to discuss how we can make the clan look more organized to the outside. The first thing of course is a proper logo, so we went on Skype and drew up some ideas.

We were looking for something with a symbol in it, rather than simple letters with a circle around them. We also agreed that the colors should be mainly black, white and dark red.
Seeing our background story, where we claim to be the first settlers of Sirius space and were abandoned by the other colonies, we finally arrived at the 'Alpha & Omega' concept. For those who don't know what that means: Alpha means 'the first', and Omega means 'the last'. Although it has yet to be determined whether we will be 'the last' :), we both felt this suited our clan's history well.

nobodie set his drawing talents to work and started drawing some ideas on paper using the alpha and Omega symbols as leading idea. Here's a couple of drafts he made:

The first idea:

Then he suddenly came up with something different, that in my eyes was a brilliant way to incorporate the Alpha and Omega symbols with the name of our clan.
Here's the raw sketch:
Posted Image

And here's the worked out design:
Posted Image

We both agreed that this would be the way to go and I started duplicating the drawing and turning it into something graphical. Both of us are pretty much perfectionists, so it took quite a lot of try-outs to get it right, but after about 15 hours of work :) we finally ended up with this.

The official logo: (click on the thumbnail to notice the background is transparent and there's smoke behind the logo)

The version more suitable for avatars etc.:
Posted Image

I'll describe the logo.
The Alpha symbol can be seen in the back. It's the two diagonal lines that make up the top of the image.
The Omega symbol can be seen on the bottom, turned up side down.
Finally, the letters 'CCoF' can be seen in the middle of the logo, in an abstract form.

We at least are very happy with the result. We hope you like it too. :excl:

Thanks for the replies and votes so far. It seems there was a problem with the first image, it's sorted now though.

Keep 'em coming!

I was a bit reluctant to do this, but I guess it's a good way to get objective views.

Please take a look at the image below. And please tell me what you think of it.
I appreciate honest opinions, I can deal with the criticism.
I will take any view at heart, so feel free to be elaborate.

And just for fun I threw in a poll, I'd appreciate it if you could cast your vote there to help get a general view.

Thanks!

Good stuff buddy, I can see you have been practicing and made a lot of progress! My favorites in your last post are Ace Rimmer's and Fen's. The way you set up the color balance in Ace's is really nicely done I think, and I really like the partial border that overlaps in the bottom left corner in Fen's sig, as well the large transparent area. And the colors fit each other well in that one too.

If you don't mind me giving you one little tip though: most of your sigs that have shadows near the outer borders, have the shadows cut off at the sig outer edges. Fen's sig is a good example of that. This is hard to see when you are working on it, but it always shows when the sig is posted. You can prevent this by making sure that the borders of the shadow layers do not cross the final outer borders of the sig (the 500x150). I personally always apply the shadows on a new 100% transparent border, and make sure this layer is 500x150 px or smaller before I introduce the shadows.
What I find very helpful too, is having one (or sometimes 3) background layer(s) in white, black and/or grey (the forum background color). While working on the sig I click these layers on and off, to see if there might be some residual pixels from a render floating around, and everything is where it should be.

By the way, I love the font on Qjake's sig. (the one you used for his name) Any chance you wanna tell me what the name of that font is?

Keep up the good work buddy! :)

#2075064 My sig portfolio

Posted by Black Scorpion on 09 January 2010 - 01:27 AM in Signature GFX Area

Welcome to my personal sig portfolio.

Over the last 2 years, designing custom signatures and other graphical work has slowly become my hobby and I absolutely love doing it. Over time, my collection of custom sigs has been stacking up a bit, and so I decided to make some sort of portfolio in which I can display the best of my work.

If you fancy my style, feel free to request one for yourself. My sigs are of course 100% free of charge, as it is my hobby. In return I do ask for a little patience, as I do have a full-time job and other preoccupations, and I don't like to rush my work. Most sigs are completed within a couple of days time though.

I will update the portfolio every time I finish a new request.

Background info:
On Tekagi's we have a couple of people who like to design custom signatures for community members, I'm one of them. I started doing sigs about 2 years ago on another server. From then on I received requests every now and then from people who wanted me to make them a custom sig. I started reading tutorials and spend a lot of hours practicing them, trying out new techniques and especially a lot of re-trying. After 2 years I have learned quite a lot of cool stuff. On the other hand, good graphical programs have so many different features, which can each be applied and combined in so many different ways, that the possibilities are in fact countless. Therefore, I don't think I'll ever be done learning.

Most people use Photoshop for their graphical work. Personally I prefer a program less known to the public. It's called GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). I don't have the money to pay for a registered version of PS and GIMP is totally free and expandable. Part of the plug-ins are designed by the community and the program even serves as a development platform for new scripts. This makes GIMP to arguably the best graphical manipulation program for public use.

My thanks to the GIMP Development Team and community for providing a magnificent tool with unlimited possibilities.

Sorry I missed this one m8.

Those drawings are incredible. I used to draw a bit myself, and know all about how difficult it can be to get the results you got. You are a very very talented artist m8, that even shows blatantly in your simplest drafts. I love your work. Really good stuff.

Below you can see a wallpaper I made. It is a general wallpaper and not necessarily reflects the mod or features in it. I kept this wallpaper nice and clean, but might add others - that might even include stuff from the new mod - later on.
This wallpaper does offer one first little teaser though: - 'Common Destiny' is going to be the name of the new mod.

Below this post you can see a ZIP file attached. In this file there are several resolutions of the wallpaper to suit different screen resolutions. The resolutions that are included in the file are:
  • 1024x640
  • 1024x768
  • 1600x1000
  • 1600x1200
  • 1680x1050
  • 1920x1200
If your resolution is not in the ZIP file, please let me know and I'll make one for you.
The file is free for all to use. If you have any questions, remarks or suggestions, feel free to let me know.

Enjoy.
